Over 70 billion fish are farmed worldwide for human consumption every year, with their welfare being generally neglected.
90% of these farmed fish are in Asia
Our Work
While existing organisations have made meaningful progress on welfare issues, they have only been able to improve the welfare of a small fraction of Asia’s farmed fish.
Scale Welfare will build on existing research and conduct our own field studies to test multiple intervention models to improve farmed fish welfare in Southeast Asia specifically. The most cost-effective intervention will be piloted and scaled to improve the lwelfare of millions, or even billions, of farmed fish.

Geographical focus
We are currently focusing our attention on the Philippines and Vietnam, two of the top 10 fish-producing countries in the world. Fish farming supports the livelihoods of thousands of small-scale farmers and is an important part of both countries’ economies and food security.
By prioritising cost-effectiveness, we aim to identify interventions that improve fish welfare while also supporting sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmed fish producers. A win-win situation!
